Boxing in a stone fireplace after vandalising stone flags to make it happen is a sad fate for such a characterful feature. But this is a project we needed to remedy.
The proximity of electrical cables behind the plasterboard meant that for safety reasons the cables and joists were mapped before removing the boarding.
Working with the problem encountered, we wanted to retain the carpet which was fitted up to the plasterboard boxing and not break into the false ceiling added in the previous installation to accomodate cables for additional lighting. Not the most eloquent solution!
The ring circuit for the plug sockets had been broken and cables were run behind studding resulting in some messy installation. We decided to run cables around the base of the fireplace and box them in using matching flooring from another part of the house as well as adding a ceiling plinth with integrated lighting. Two ring sockets would be re-instated along with the addition of a three way lighting switch. A feature fire was added and an oak beam added across the chimney.
